Custom Cabinetry
A beautiful new kitchen
To be truly “custom cabinetry”, the design, as in the case
of the kitchen shown here, must reflect the individuality of the customer and
the uniqueness of their life style.
“Custom cabinetry” is a phrase often misused. To most
shops, “custom” means lay out the project and then select cabinets from their
list of standard sizes. It is “custom” for two reasons; first, when they pull
their standard parts and nail together that cabinet, they put the customer’s name
on it; and second, they used different standard size cabinets on this project
than on the last. These standards provide the shop with both economy in
materials costs and efficiency in labor costs.
To the true custom shop these concerns carry very little
weight. The difference in labor costs is almost non-existent. The parts for each
cabinet must be individually cut anyway. So a slight variation in size means
virtually nothing, and the difference in materials cost are so slight when
compared to the project as a whole as to be insignificant.
Therefore, when customers select a truly “custom” shop to
do the work, they know their project will accomplish exactly the purpose and
function they have envisioned with no industry imposed compromises.

The project shown here was the transformation of a small
“U” shaped kitchen with a walk-in pantry into a spacious and airy new kitchen.
(Click on the images for a better view).
The new design provides far more cabinet and drawer space,
work area, and “elbow room”. It was designed for comfort, efficiency, and
beauty.
Standard wall cabinets are 12” deep. The wall cabinets in
this kitchen are 14” deep. This allows for surprisi
ngly greater storage space.
In addition, that serving platter that usually must either
be stored elsewhere or must stand on edge in the cabinet can now be laid flat
along with the other dishes.
When we needed a base cabinet 13 ¾” wide for the storage of
broiling pans, cookie sheets, and the like, we were not concerned with how that
was going to fit, because the adjoining cabinets were designed to, among other
things, accommodate that need.
In short, there is absolutely no reason to “settle” for
anything. Create your own dream project from your own imagination and
requirements, not from someone else’s book of standards.
A built-in wet bar
This
“Adult beverage station” was designed for table seating and includes an under
the counter refrigerator. It is a wonderful setting for entertaining and for
comfortable chats with family and friends. It is made of Koa, a beautiful wood
native to the slopes of the Big Island of Hawai’i.
